Dushanbe rooftop solar street lights

Dushanbe residents launch the “Dushanbe Solar City” campaign to crowdfund solar panels for the first electric car to run the streets of the city as a food truck, serving locally produced, fresh and healthy snacks, in a unique effort to promote the use of renewable energy.

Dushanbe has significant capacity to utilize solar energy as it enjoys over 300 sunny days a year. The truck will operate in the city generating clean photovoltaic electricity and will be equipped with USB terminals and sockets to charge gadgets, and access to free internet connection.

The number of green zones in Dushanbe is increasing, but so is the use of ground transportation, which leads to significant air pollution and greenhouse gases. 80 percent of total air emissions in the city are associated with transport sources, the main consumers of non-renewable fuel.

Traditional street lighting relies on grid electricity, leading to high operational costs and energy waste. In contrast, solar street lights provide an energy-efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative.

Emerging solar streetlight designs integrate solar + wind hybrid power, increasing reliability in diverse weather conditions. As governments prioritize green infrastructure, more cities are mandating the implementation of solar streetlights in new urban developments.

Since solar streetlights operate independently of the grid, they continue functioning even when electricity is down, making them ideal for disaster-prone regions. Cities and municipalities are increasingly adopting solar streetlights for public roads, highways, parks, and smart city infrastructure.
